This is a course for the third topic of the fourth unit of the A2 programme in psychology.

This course will help students develop knowledge and understanding of research methods associated with cognitive and developmental psychology. Students can develop this through direct study of research methods; by undertaking practical research activities involving collection, analysis and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data, and by analysing and evaluating studies relevant to cognitive and developmental psychology.

The importance of play in children's development is the focus of this unit. You will learn about the stages and types of play and how you can provide appropriate activities to support development through play. You will think about how to provide children with challenge and risk in a safe environment and the role of the adult in encouraging exploration and investigation.  

 

This unit teaches you about the preparation and maintenance of a safe environment and how to safeguard children and adults through working practices.  You will also consider your role in managing conflict when working with children.

This unit focuses on patterns of development for each area and the factors that affect development.  Students will be introduced to ways of observing children so that they can support development through appropriate activities and care routines.  They will also learn how to work with children when they move from one setting to another.

An introductory unit designed to give the students an overview of the types of settings and local provision for children in their area. They will learn how to prepare for working in settings and the responsibilities of their role. The content also includes gaining understanding of children’s individual needs and how to treat children fairly. They will also gain an insight into their preferred learning style and develop their ability to study.
